What is motivation? The definitive term for motivation is as stated: The reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way, the general desire or willingness of someone to do something. I am no genius, nor am I someone who can truly tell you how to stay motivated 100% of the time. What I can say is, I've had my fair share of struggles to stay motivated, and I understand how frustrating and even discouraging it can be to constantly fall out of that motivated mentality. Those constant struggles bring us here! In this blog ill go over 5 ways that might be able to help you stay motivated! If you don’t feel like reading the whole thing, I ask you to read the final section of this paragraph. Thank you for your time!
1. Set Clear, Achievable Goals
Now this is a big one! Well, for me at least, I find that doing this has made things so much easier and life a lot less stressful. A lot of the time, I am way too ambitious for my own good, and not reaching my goal fast enough discourages me, and I end up losing the motivation to keep going on the project at hand. Although it kinda hurts to know I can't just reach that goal immediately, it eases my mind knowing I'm making efficient progress on it rather than putting my focus on something large and giving up.
With smaller objectives, your brain can picture success more easily, which can trigger a sense of purpose or bring out more determination to complete the objective. Here is how you can apply this to your daily life.
- Break big goals into smaller, manageable steps.
- Write your goals down and review them regularly.
- Celebrate small wins to reinforce progress.
For example, instead of saying “I want to get fit,” try “I will walk 30 minutes five days a week.” This clarity helps your mind stay focused and motivated.
2. Create Positive Habits and Routines
Mental health played a big part in staying motivated for me. Losing motivation would constantly bring me into a slight state of depression and I don't know, maybe this might apply to you as well, so let me tell you this, no matter how hard life gets, no matter how grim things get, and no matter how much you want to give up. Please. Please don’t give in to your thoughts. No matter how shitty life feels it will be very beneficial to always try to attempt to retain a positive mentality. Positive habits and routines! These can bring ease to your mind and you might find that it helps you remember what to do or stay focused!
How to apply it:
- Start with simple daily actions related to your goal.
- Use triggers or cues, like setting a workout time or placing your running shoes by the door.
- Be consistent, even when motivation feels low.
- When no one else will, congratulate yourself and let yourself know that you did a good job
Over time, these habits become part of your identity, making it easier to stay motivated without relying on fleeting feelings.
3. Visualize Success and Positive Outcomes
Visualizing your own success and keeping a positive mentality on your outcome plays a big part in staying motivated. Why bring yourself down? If you can always think about how you might not reach your goals, how you might not have enough time or enough money then what’s stopping you from thinking those positive thoughts? “ I won’t be able to, it's too hard,”-“ But you know what, ill take a break, refresh my mind, and try again, I know I can do this.” Picture yourself completing the goal and reward yourself!
How to apply it:
- Spend a few minutes daily imagining yourself completing your goal.
- Picture how it feels, what you see, and the benefits you gain.
- Combine visualization with positive affirmations.
For instance, if your goal is to finish a marathon, visualize crossing the finish line strong and proud. This mental rehearsal can increase your drive to keep training.
4. Find Intrinsic Motivation Through Purpose
Intrinsic motivation is the drive to engage in an activity because it is enjoyable or personally rewarding rather than for external rewards. Fueled by internal satisfaction.
When your motivation is rooted in purpose, it tends to be more sustainable and fulfilling.
How to apply it:
- Reflect on why your goal matters to you personally.
- Connect your actions to your values or passions.
- Focus on the process and growth, not just the outcome.
For example, if you’re exercising, remember it’s not just about appearance but about feeling healthy, energized, and confident. This deeper connection fuels lasting motivation.
5. Use Accountability and Social Support
We are a social species, it's good to talk and share your goals with others or joining a community that can create external encouragement and a sense of responsibility. Personally I've struggled immensely to share my feelings or goals with others due to the fact that when I tried, it felt like no one listened so I found that writing things down would sooth the feeling of every thought bundling up.
How to apply it:
- Tell friends or family about your goals.
- Join groups, classes, or online communities with similar interests.
- Use apps or tools that track progress and send reminders.
- Write your goals and feelings down in a journal
Knowing someone else is cheering you on or expecting updates can push you to stay committed, especially on tough days.
Well, that concludes this blog post and I hope this could help in some way even if it was a tiny way. No matter how much I try I always end up losing motivation, I’m not trying to discourage you or make you think it's impossible to stay motivated all the time, but i want to share my struggles, maybe you can relate. I know it can be hard to stay positive and motivated, but what's important is that you don't give up, don't give up on yourself, on your dreams, or anything at all! I know you are capable of reaching whatever your heart desires. Even if you fall 100 times, don't be embarrassed to get back up and keep pushing. If you think no one believes in you, just know I do even though I may not know you personally, I believe.
Staying motivated isn’t about constant energy or willpower—it’s about understanding how your mind works and using simple strategies to keep moving forward. By setting clear goals, building habits, visualizing success, connecting with purpose, and leveraging social support, you can nurture motivation from within and sustain it over time. Try these five methods and watch how your mindset shifts toward lasting motivation and achievement.
Thank you for your time!
